S1P vs S3 Safety Shoes: What the Ratings Mean

Most UAE sites and main contractors specify safety footwear to EN ISO 20345. The standard requires a toe cap tested to 200 joules of impact, and the letters after the S tell you what else the shoe protects against.

• S1: closed heel, antistatic, energy absorbing heel and a fuel oil resistant sole.
• S1P: everything in S1 plus a puncture resistant midsole, so nails and sharp debris cannot come through the sole.
• S3: everything in S1P plus a water resistant upper and a cleated outsole. The usual choice for construction and outdoor sites.
• SRC: the sole was slip tested on ceramic tile with detergent and on steel with glycerine (the marking used under the 2011 edition of the standard).
• HRO: the outsole resists contact heat up to 300 degrees C for a short time, for hot surfaces, asphalt and welding areas.

EN ISO 20346 is the protective footwear standard, with a 100 joule toe cap. It suits lighter duty work such as warehousing and facilities, but most construction sites ask for EN ISO 20345.
