Wire Rope Basics

Steel Wire Ropes for Lifting, Rigging and Hoisting

A steel wire rope is a set of strands laid around a core. The number of strands, the wires in each strand and the type of core decide how the rope behaves: how flexible it is, how well it resists abrasion and crushing, and whether it spins under load. Choosing the right construction matters as much as choosing the right diameter, because a rope that is too stiff for its sheaves wears out early, and a rope that spins can twist a load out of control.

Prior Safe supplies Mahadev steel wire ropes to contractors, crane and rigging companies, ports, oil and gas operators, fabrication workshops and government buyers in the UAE. We help you match the construction, diameter, core and finish to the job.

Which Wire Rope Construction Does What

RopeWhat it isTypical use
6x19Six strands of about 19 wires: fewer, thicker wiresGeneral lifting and hoisting, and slings, where abrasion resistance matters more than flexibility
6x36 and 6x37Six strands of about 36 wires: more, finer wiresCranes, winches and hoists running over sheaves and drums, where flexibility and fatigue life matter
8x19Eight strands, a rounder and more flexible rope than 6x19 of the same sizeHoists and equipment with smaller sheaves
19x7 rotation resistantA multi layer rope whose layers are laid in opposite directionsSingle fall lifting and tower cranes, where a free hanging load must not spin
IWRCAn independent wire rope core: a steel core instead of a fibre coreHeavy duty cranes and winches, multi layer drum spooling, higher strength and crush resistance

Selection Guide

How to Choose the Right Wire Rope

  1. Start with the load and the safety factor. The minimum breaking load of the rope must exceed the working load by the safety factor your equipment and standard require. Your crane or hoist manual states the rope size and grade it was designed for, so match it.
  2. Match the diameter to the sheaves and drum. A rope that is too thick for the sheave groove pinches and wears, and one that is too thin is unsupported and flattens.
  3. Pick the construction for the duty. More wires per strand, as in 6x36, give more flexibility and longer fatigue life over sheaves. Fewer, thicker wires, as in 6x19, resist abrasion and crushing better.
  4. Choose the core. An independent wire rope core gives strength and crush resistance on drums. A fibre core gives flexibility for lighter duty.
  5. Decide on rotation resistance. For single fall lifts and tall lifts where the load hangs free, use a rotation resistant rope.
  6. Choose the finish for the environment. Bright rope for indoor and lubricated service, galvanized for coastal and outdoor sites, stainless steel where corrosion is critical.

Not sure? Send us your equipment make and model, the current rope size and what it lifts, and we will recommend a matching Mahadev rope.

Industries

Who We Supply Wire Rope to in the UAE

  • Construction and cranes: tower cranes, mobile cranes, hoists and site winches on projects across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
  • Ports, marine and offshore: mooring, towing and cargo handling at Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and the ports of Sharjah, where galvanized rope stands up to salt air.
  • Oil and gas: rigging and lifting for maintenance and shutdown work.
  • Fabrication and steel workshops: overhead cranes and hoists in the industrial areas of Ajman, Sharjah and Mussafah.
  • Warehousing and logistics: hoists and lifting equipment in distribution centres.
Safe Use

Wire Rope Inspection and Care

A wire rope is a wear part. Inspect it before each use and have a competent person examine it at the intervals your site rules and lifting regulations require. Take a rope out of service if you find broken wires beyond the discard limit, kinks, birdcaging, crushing, core protrusion, heavy corrosion or a marked loss of diameter. ISO 4309 sets out the discard criteria for crane ropes.

Keep ropes lubricated, store reels off the ground and out of direct sun, and never drag a rope over sharp edges.

FAQ

Wire Rope FAQ

Which wire rope is best for a crane?
Most cranes specify a flexible rope such as 6x36 with an independent wire rope core, or a rotation resistant rope for single fall lifting. Always follow the rope specification in the crane manual.
What is the difference between 6x19 and 6x36 wire rope?
Both have six strands. 6x19 has fewer, thicker wires, so it resists abrasion and crushing better. 6x36 has more, finer wires, so it bends more easily over sheaves and lasts longer in fatigue.
When do I need rotation resistant wire rope?
When a single rope lifts a free hanging load, particularly over long heights, because a standard rope tends to unlay and spin the load.
Galvanized or stainless steel wire rope for marine use?
Galvanized rope is the economical standard for marine and coastal work. Stainless steel lasts longer in highly corrosive or visible applications, but costs more and has different strength characteristics.
Can you deliver wire rope to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?
Yes. We deliver across the UAE from our Ajman warehouse, within 1 to 2 working days.
Do you offer bulk and dealer pricing on wire rope?
Yes, for contractors, resellers, project and tender buyers. Send your requirement on WhatsApp for a quote.
