How to Choose Fabric and GSM for UAE Work
- 100% cotton: the coolest and most comfortable choice in UAE heat, and it does not melt onto the skin near sparks. Best for outdoor crews.
- Poly cotton: holds its shape and colour better through repeated industrial washing and dries faster. A good all round choice.
- Polyester and poly viscose: hard wearing and economical, but warmer, and polyester can melt near heat, so keep it away from hot work.
- GSM: grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. 200 to 240 GSM is lighter and cooler for summer; 260 to 300 GSM is tougher for workshops, heavy wear and the cooler months.
Every SafeEss garment is triple stitched throughout, and the general workwear fabrics are tested to ASTM D3774, D3775 and D3776, AATCC 135 and ISO 105 for fabric width, construction, weight, shrinkage and colour fastness.
Fire Retardant Workwear: Treated or Inherent
FR workwear comes in two kinds. Treated fabrics, such as Pyrovatex and Proban cotton, carry a flame retardant finish, rated for up to 50 industrial washes. Inherent fabrics, such as modacrylic and aramid blends, are flame resistant in the fibre itself, so the protection lasts the life of the garment, and they are lighter at 150 to 180 GSM. SafeEss FR workwear is tested to these standards:
- EN ISO 11612: protection against heat and flame. The codes A1, B1, C1 and F1 rate limited flame spread, convective heat, radiant heat and contact heat.
- EN ISO 11611: protection for welding and allied processes.
- EN 1149-5: electrostatic properties, so the garment does not build up a static charge in explosive atmospheres.
- NFPA 2112: the American standard for flame resistant garments against flash fire, often named by oil and gas operators.
Wear FR garments as the outer layer, fully closed with the sleeves down, and do not wear synthetic clothing underneath.
Hi-Vis Workwear and EN ISO 20471
EN ISO 20471 sets how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape a garment needs to be seen in daylight and under headlights. Garments are graded Class 1 to Class 3, with Class 3 giving the most coverage for work near fast traffic. SafeEss hi-vis fabric is certified to EN 20471, with two inch reflective tape at the shoulders, sleeves, back and shins in silver or YSY. Tell us the class your site requires when you ask for a quote.
Colours and Uniform Options
SafeEss workwear comes in navy blue, royal blue, sky blue, green, red, grey and fluorescent orange. Conti suits come in a single colour or two tone, and reflective tape comes in silver or YSY, one or two inch, single or double strip. Many companies use colour to tell trades, subcontractors or shifts apart on a busy site.

- What is the difference between a boiler suit and a coverall?
- Both are one piece suits. In the SafeEss range the coverall adds radio and gas detector loops at the chest and waist and Baltek reinforced pressure points, for maintenance and gas monitoring work.
- What GSM workwear is best for the UAE summer?
- For outdoor crews, 100% cotton at 200 to 240 GSM is the coolest. Heavier 260 to 300 GSM fabric suits workshops, heavy wear and the cooler months.
- Do I need FR coveralls for oil and gas work?
- Most oil and gas operators require flame resistant clothing in process areas, usually to EN ISO 11612 or NFPA 2112. Check the permit to work and the operator HSE requirements. SafeEss FR workwear is tested to both.
- Is your hi-vis workwear certified?
- Yes. SafeEss hi-vis fabric is certified to EN 20471, and a fabric test report is available.
- Which colours does SafeEss workwear come in?
